Dua Lipa is “ready to start the next chapter” after launching her single “Houdini.” The three-time Grammy winner shared her excitement to release new music while speaking on the red carpet at Variety’s Power of Women Presented by Lifetime on Thursday evening. A new album is expected sometime next year, though no official release plans have been announced.
“I definitely got more music coming. Right now I’m in ‘Houdini’ world. I’m just thrilled that I’m finally signed to release new music,” Lipa shares. “Honestly, it hit me so quick — the intensity of everyone’s reaction. It’s amazing. It’s definitely the biggest reaction I’ve ever gotten from anything I’ve ever done. I’m just really happy and ready to start this next chapter.”
Lipa attended Variety’s Power of Women event to present the producer of the year award to LuckyChap Entertainment and its co-founders Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara, honoring the production banner’s continued commitment to championing female storytellers and filmmakers, strong female characters and opportunities for female HODs across every facet of production.
LuckyChap is a producer on the year’s highest-grossing film “Barbie,” which Robbie starred in. Lipa features in the cast as Mermaid Barbie. Her original song “Dance the Night” was also one of the breakout hits from the film’s soundtrack and has earned a Grammy nomination for best song written for visual media.
“It’s really just so exciting and such a dream to be part of such a mammoth movie. It’s unbelievable. I feel very lucky,” Lipa tells Variety on the carpet. “It’s just nice to see people’s response — the whole energy behind the film, the meaning behind it, the solidarity between women. It’s been beautiful to see.”
Lipa also teased her next film role in Matthew Vaughn’s spy ensemble action film “Argylle,” releasing in theaters in February 2024. The trailer features Lipa dancing with Henry Cavill, firing off a machine gun and jetting away on a motorcycle.
“I had the most fun. Honestly, being on a motorcycle and doing all the stunts. It was just so much fun. And working with Henry was amazing. Matthew is just such a great director,” Lipa shared, before clarifying, “No music for this one. Just focusing on the acting.”
Lipa released her new single, “Houdini,” earlier this month. Variety executive music editor Jem Aswad hailed the song as a “banger” that shows “both a progression from and a continuation of ‘Future Nostalgia,’” Lipa’s last album for which she won a Grammy award for best pop vocal album.
Variety’s Power of Women event on Thursday evening also honors Billie Eilish, Fantasia Barrino, Carey Mulligan and Lily Gladstone, along with other figures profiled in the publication’s annual Women’s Impact Report.
