Weekly Commentary (Updated Sept. 14, 2023): The best actor race will surely be a bloodbath, with every new contender dropping at a festival, living up to (or exceeding) expectations.
We already know that Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) will be two strong bets for noms. There’s also Telluride standouts Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) and Andrew Scott (“All of Us Strangers”), alongsideVenice breakouts including Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”) and Adam Driver (“Ferrari”).
Noteworthy: Peter Sarsgaard won the Volpi Cup for best actor his heartbreaking turn in Michel Franco’s “Memory.” Aside from the movie not having U.S. distribution yet, the role feels more likely for a supporting push when it gets acquired and released.
TIFF delivered a vivacious turn from veteran actor Jeffrey Wright in MGM’s “American Fiction” while his studio counterpart Jamie Foxx brought star power and charm in the highly entertaining “The Burial.”
Wright is due for love and comedic work in Cord Jefferson’s debut feature stands as his finest.
Regarding Foxx, he uses everything in his acting tool belt that makes Maggie Betts’ sophomore feature an undeniable crowdpleaser. A comeback for the actor that faced health problems earlier this year, could be something the Actors Branch gravitate towards.
There just not enough spots for all this talent. Someone (or some people) are going to be left off.

About the Academy Awards
The Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, is Hollywood’s most prestigious artistic award in the film industry. Seventeen branches are represented within the nearly 10,000-person membership.
