Awards season is fully underway in Hollywood, as the nominations for the 81st Golden Globe Awards were announced early Monday morning.
Cedric “The Entertainer” and Wilmer Valderrama read the nominees on a livestream via CBS, which picked up the broadcast rights to this year’s kudocast, airing Jan. 7 on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
The first major awards ceremony of the season, the Golden Globes serves as a bellwether for both the Oscars and Emmys. This is a landmark year for the Globes, as it marks the first ceremony since Dick Clark Prods. and Eldridge Industries acquired the awards show’s assets, rights and properties from the now-defunct Hollywood Foreign Press Association. (Variety parent company PMC owns Dick Clark Prods. in a joint venture with Eldridge.)
In recent years, the organization of journalists behind the awards were rocked by a series of scandals, including a Los Angeles Times report that revealed not one of the group’s 87 members were Black. In the wake of the report, stars steered clear of the group’s events, and their publicists threatened a boycott unless reforms were undertaken. The 2022 broadcast on NBC was canceled as a result. Last year’s ceremony was hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael, who cracked jokes onstage about the HFPA’s lack of diversity. Now, the Globes seeks to reinvent itself and restore its reputation as the loose and fun, yet still prestigious, major awards ceremony.
